In-Class Activity: Mindful Observation

Points: 10 pts (Class participation)
Due date: Friday, Mar 1 at midnight
Resources: Adobe Spark, your phone
Summary: The goal for this assignment is for you to get acquainted with your creative partner and introduce you to the Spark Building, which is our client for this project.

Take A Walk

Find your team partner and take walk over to the Spark Building. You’ll use this time to get to know your partner and the physical environment of the Spark Building, which is the client you’ll be working with for the next few weeks. It’s a beautiful day, so take this opportunity to practice mindful observation as a way to find creative inspiration for this assignment.

As you walk with your partner, discuss the following:

  1. Introduce yourself – your name, major, and where you grew up
  2. What do you do outside of school?
  3. What do you want to be when you grow up?
  4. What did you do this weekend?
  5. What is one thing that is important to you when doing group work?
  6. Share one picture from your phone that you think would be interesting to share.

Before you enter, take some photos and/or video of the exterior of the building, including:

  1. An exterior shot of the building
  2. Something outside the building that identifies it as The Spark
  3. Something on the outside of the building that you never noticed before

Take note of any impressions and observations.

  • What is your initial impression of the building?
  • What do you see outside the building?
  • Is it clear where to enter the building?

As you enter and during your visit, take photos and/or video of the following

  1. The view as you enter the building
  2. A person who works at the Spark Building
  3. A screen or printed piece containing information about resources or activities within the building
  4. Someone by themselves
  5. Someone talking with or interacting with at least one other person
  6. A piece of technology that you find interesting
  7. An architectural detail or feature of the building that you never noticed before
  8. A close-up shot of something in the building

Take note of any impressions and observations.

  • Is it clear where to go when you enter the building?
  • What do you hear?
  • What information is available about what you can do in the building?
  • Is it easy to find things?
  • How do you use or would you use the space and resources in this building?
  • What impressed or surprised you the most?
  • What did you find confusing or disappointing?

Sit Together

Finally, sit together in the Spark.

Create a shared document in Google Docs that you can both access for this assignment. Then, take notes on the following as you sit together.

  1. Decide on how you will communicate on this project. Share your email addresses and/or social media contact information.
  2. Read through the instructions for Assignment 3A and note any questions you have about the assignment.
  3. Review the photos and videos you captured. Which ones are most relevant to the assignment?
  4. Discuss your initial observations and impressions of the building and the resources it offers.
  5. Take note of any initial ideas or concepts that come to mind.

Share Your Observations

  1. Identify the best 8-10 photos or videos from your time at the Spark
  2. Create a Spark Page and/or Spark Video (up to 2 minutes) using the media you gathered
  3. You can add text, music, etc. as you see fit.
  4. Save your work by selecting the Share option. Copy the URL.
  5. Paste the URL in the document you created. You’ll also need this URL to turn in the assignment.

Come to class on Monday, Mar 4 ready to share what you observed and learned.

Turn it in

  1. Turn in the URL for your Spark Video or Page to the Mindful Observation assignment dropbox on Blackboard.
  2. You don’t need to turn in the shared document you created. The document is intended as a resource for you and your partner as you develop your creative concepts.
